Nerve Regeneration: How It Works
- An injury occurs
- Is it in the peripheral system or spinal cord? Peripheral System injuries have a high potential for recovery and regeneration, while it is rare for the spinal cord
- Surgery takes place (optional)
- The body begins the nerve regeneration process almost immediately
- Schwann cells require assistance to initiate regrowth of nerves, this help would come from the fibroblast cell
- Without the help Schwann cells fail to migrate and axons don’t grow back properly, if at all
- The Fibroblast cell sends the signal to the Schwann cell
- The nerve regrows new, into a baby nerve – this means it doesn’t have the same capabilities and functionalities as the nerves that died or were damaged. It must become mature
The Healing Stages of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is defined as a chronic debilitating pain, continuous beyond the healing of the wound, surgery, fracture, or abrasion and out of proportion of the injury. It is believed by industry experts to be linked to the nervous system.
Overview
The healing process of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is gradual. The pain initially heightens and reaches a peak and then diminishes throughout the healing process.
There is a science to the healing found in the regeneration process. Nerves regenerate at an average rate of one inch per month. Alleviation from the symptoms factor from several variables. Take into consideration the degree of the injury, if the nerve was cut, if denervation has taken place, and the health of the individual. In the illustration shown above, a healthy nerve cell is compared to an unhealthy nerve cell. Damaged myelin sheaths lose their sensory impulses and do not work.
The Myelin Sheath acts a protective barrier around the neurons (nerve cells). Without the myelin sheath, the neurons are uncoordinatored and do not communicate or function. This can result in an impaired central nervous system which can result in a lot of CRPS symptoms.
There is something that can be done. Get on a Myelin Sheath, or Nerve Repair Diet. Nerves do regenerate, and will repair themselves however; a lot of times there are hindrances in place to prevent that from happening. Adequate nutrition is often one of them. A nerve repair diet is a diet that is specific to recovery of the central nervous system. This is consisting of a powerhouse of nerve-repair supplements all playing crucial roles in the revival, rebuilding and nourishment of nerve cells. Although our bodies produce some of the nutrients required. In circumstances of traumatic injuries, a lot of times it’s not enough.
Stage I.
Symptoms are usually occurring at this stage, leading up to the official diagnosis. Conventional treatment is applied, which is usually prescription medication in combination with physical therapy. The pain is managed at this phase. The healing is usually measured through x-rays, and physical therapy.
Stage II.
After nutritional therapy is implemented, the pain will heighten, and then taper off with each flare. While the nerves are healing the pain can intensify, and feel overwhelming. That is a normal part of the healing process. It initially gets worse before it gets better.
Stage III.
Symptoms will gradually, yet noticeably be reduced starting within a month’s time. Significant changes will be noticed within two months duration as; nerves regenerate at the average rate of one-inch per month. You may realize you are able to go without the opiods, and other prescription medication to manage the pain and symptoms. The pain and sensitivity will diminish over time, depending on the extent of your injury. You are able to function and manage without dependency on them, and maybe eventually wean off of the medications altogether.
Conclusion
Speaking from a firsthand account, it got worse before it got better. The healing is measured through the degree of the symptoms and pain. Over time the pain diminished until we reached remission status becoming asymptomatic of all of the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome symptoms altogether. This entire process took about two to three months from the time we began our nutritional therapy regimen. We were in stage two, with type two of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which means there is a specific case of nerve damage. Overall, you do have a chance at regaining some normalcy to your life. There can still be life, after diagnosis.
